How about comparing apples to apples? Comparing custom built autos is not going to be a very fair comparison. There is a wide range of upgrades that make them go from little better than than stock to virtually bulletproof, depending on what you spend and who is building it.
The manuals are (in stock form) more reliable and will work harder before they break.

I have a auto on my 2010 but I sure miss the manual when towing.

I had a South bend DD 3600 in my 06 dually. It was tough (lots of sled pulls with twin turbos) and it was great for towing. Only problem was the clutch noise. it was down right embarasing to me because eveyone thought something was wrong with the truck.
