Ether shatters the glow plugs, and also does not properly burn in the combustion chamber in an IDI engine, making for much harder starts and severe loading of the crank/rods while initially firing. Fix your glow plugs.

how does it start if Plugged in overnight. my 91 VW 1.6 Diesal needs three GPs changed, I cant get at the left 3, need to R&R the injector pump. so I just plug it in, even in summer.I refuse to pay a VW shop $120 a hr to do that and possbily break something while there in there.

You don't need to R&R the I.P. you should be able to get in there. Get them broke loose and get you a piece of hose to push over the ends and screw them out. Re-install in reverse procedure.

I change my GPs every Sept. before winter. Also VW warning, get disable the EGR it kills the intake manifold and valves with tar.Replace that timing belt, and waterpump every 80,000 miles. If water pump rides on timing belt.
