Ether is bad on anything let alone an MK3.

Black smoke on that little car, is likely a result of the turbo plumbing coming apart of off, resulting in limited air supply and too much fuel. Or, the air filter is plugged - check the wheel well inlet as this has a screen on it that can plug with road debris - or even a dead bird (don't ask me how I know that).

Check that his intercooler (front leftside fender / bumper) is not damaged in some way. Lastly, check to see that the fuel filter bleed screw on the bottom of it was tightened back up or that the lines on the top of the filter are tight.

Other than that, I don't know.

Let's start with the basics! Replace the glow plugs and lets go from there. Have you/he scanned the ecm? If so there should be some codes/faults, what r they? How many miles on it? Has someone ran B100, (bio fuel) through it? Lastly DO NOT USE EATHER!!!! You'll blow the head off of it! Use WD40 instead! Another trick is soak a rag in gas, ring it out and hold it over the intake. (don't let the intake suck the rag in).

A '99 isn't going to display a boat load of codes but the idea of the glow plugs and its harness is a good one. I've done a number of GP's on my cars - they don't last for some reason but the glow plug light would always come on though.

Scanning the ECM - you'll need a VAG-COM and not many places or people have that...

well first off stoped him from using eather, i use the gas on a rag on my 99 cummins when i need to. he has changed a bunch off stuff, but i dont what all. he has checked the code with a basic code reader but he dose not remember the code and he let the battire go bad and lost the computer programing i have herd. so i told him we need to load it up and take it to a dealer where they have the quipment to fix it

put a battery in it and drive it, the codes will come back. read them and let us know before u take it to the dealer. there is a plethora or knowledge around here. I personally have 7yrs+ with vw of america, plus my own personal experience. one of my 1st cars was an 84 diesel rabbit i drove/worked on thrugh high school.

Go to the TDI forum and see if there is anyone in your area with VAG-Com.
I have it but you are to far away.

What is so bad about either?? as long as the glow plugs don't work you will be ok with a little squirt. Just never use either with working glow plugs.

I have used either to start my 6.9 ford for over 10 years.
