So how good are these engines/cars Tye? Thinking about buying one but am not sure....also, can your average guy do basic/intermediate work without special tools?

Used to work with a guy - his girlfriend had a diesel Jetta (02 or 03)....he claimed it was a real piece of junk. Any truth to that? Never paid too much attention to them but everything Ive heard has been positive. Forgot to mention, hes a diehard Ford guy....and proud 6.0 owner...

I had a buddy in high school had a 78 (I believe) Rabbit - he beat the living HELL out of it and it just ran and ran forever.

Like I said the TDI's are the best motor. The TD's are ok and PD's are finiky.

The one we have now is a 03 and it is far from a piece of junk. 56mpg and 100mph easy. Here to Calgary on almost full tank (55L) and fun the entire time.

The motors and fuel mileage is great! They do have there problems. The 03 is the cream of the crop. Last year of the Tdi before they went with the PD. The 03 are like the 02 2nds gens is about the easiest way to compare. They do have there problems.

It was probably an 02. I don't see any real problems with the 03. The Jetta's and Beetle's come out of mexico so the quality control sucks! Now, the new body Jetta 05.5+ and 06+ Beetle's, I've had no issue's with, Germany stepped in and took over the plant. The old body Jetta wagons came out of germany and I don't see many problems with those. The best VW are the golfs. There built in Brazil. I don't see any problems with those.

Here is how you can tell were your V-dub was built, 1st 3 digits of the vin#:

-9BW-Brazil
-WVW-Germany
-3VW-Mexico
-WV-Germany (Toureg/Eurovan)
-1VW-USA

Exclamation engine very fussy

Hi there

my only question concerns an ongoing issue that I can't seem to solve.

2000 jetta tdi with 141,000 miles manual transmission.

Vag-com says quantity adjuster upper limit reached. I have replaced several parts: fuel temp, coolant temp, relay 180 and 109 and warranty did the brake light switch. Brake lights and cruise control work fine I check them often.

Any help would be nice I have also done the hammer mod as well.
this car is well maintained and gets 630+ miles to a tank mixed driving.

thanks Kevin

How's the TB look? Try cleaning it and resetting the basic settings. What your IQ set at? Next step would be taking the pump apart and cleaning it.

tb was changed as scheduled at 80,000miles all new parts installed including water pump. I'll check the IQ again should still be fine as this does not occur everytime I drive.

The hammer mod is from Tdiclub.com its a mechanical adjustment of the quanitity adjuster.

I'm all for cleaning the injection pump out just unsure about the procedure to dissassemble the pump. I might just do a diesel purge again and run some power service after that on the next fill up.

thanks

My bad! I should have been clearer. When I said TB I ment throttle body, not timing belt.
