First mod for a B5.5 Passat is to get the balance shaft module replaced/updated before it fails and takes out your engine.

Generic OBD scanners will give generic "guesses" at what a VW code is. Get the P code it shows, and go to wiki.ross-tech.com to find out what it really means and suggested repairs.

From your description, check the car carefully for coolant migration throughout the wiring harness. Common, and deadly to the electrical system.

Any of you guys that work on your own cars,
buy a Bentley service Manual. You can answer
most of your questions from there. I bought my
99 Jetta with a new timing belt change. I pulled
cover in his driveway, it was new. when I got car
home I hooked up my laptop with Vag-Com.
The car was so far retarded, it couldn't read it.
Whoever changed belt pinned pump in wrong hole.

Well I've run into the first problem with my 06 Jetta at 72k miles. I started noticing a hissing sound on acceleration. A trip to the dealer for an oil change verified my fears. The EGR cooler is leaking and has to be replaced.
