There terrible! (considering they gotta belt)

You gotta pull the side of the engine apart to get at them, then you gotta make sure the timings right on cause there an interferrence engine.

Are there years that are better to own? HP wise or mpg?

What is that stuff they use in the fuel to clean it out? ours quit running after a short trip to the c-store and they put it in and it quit doing that.

I've had 3, a Golf Diesel, a Golf TD and a Golf TDi. All great. The TDI motor is by far the best (say similar to a 12V for power - only smaller) and except for the timing chain and water pump.

04-05 were the only years they were built with the PD (Pumpe Duce) diesel. Then there were the early 90s models.

They all seem to be pretty well built. 03 was the last year of the TDi, 04 was the 1st year for the PD. The early 04s had egr cooler issues, but they fixed the issue right off the bat.

VW diesel fuel additive is just Stanadyne re-labeled.
