EGR/Oil Cooler cause HG problems, its not always a problem of when it happens just depends on how it was treated/taken care of. With the edge you would be able to check and make sure it is 100% before you buy it. You wouldnt be the only one to tow heavy with a 6.0, their transmissions are very stout and they have more room in the cab and ride very nice for being straight axle up front
Thats all good if you know that ahead of time, but some people don't want to buy a truck and turn around and spend a bunch more to make it reliable. Not everybody has a lift to work on thier own truck either.

BTW.. I've had 4 Cummins Dodges.. 2000, 2004. 2006, 2008 Blu-Tec Mega Cab.. Always leased them..
So I'm not illiterate to Diesels.. Just don't want to pay $22,000 for this Ford and then have to do all that work to just drive it..

Also looking at an 04 Duramax (LBZ) with 140,000 mi. and an 07 Cummins 5.9L with 118,000..

Thanks for the input.. Again... What is an Oasis report?????

Chris..

That would be a 2004 Duramax LB7 not LBZ..

When do the EGR, head gasket problems start?

Or did they fix these issues by 06..

Thanks, Chris..
Need more info, is the truck stock? What's the price? Tell us more about the truck, is it standard, auto, 4x4... More details. That's a big trailer. Is this truck an F350? F350 tow boss? F450? What's the weight of that trailer? That's a beast... FWIW, Diesel Power magazine bought an old 7.3 dually that was used to haul a trailer that size around for John Force's crew. The 6.0 body style will be much more stable and better all around due to the chassis improvements. As for headgaskets and other issues, none were ever "fixed" by 06, but you could certainly bulletproof this thing to prevent failure. And no matter what anyone says, there are going to be a list of things you should be outfitting on any truck you buy to tow a trailer of that size and weight. Guages would be a must in any truck, airbags more than likely, make sure brakes work good. A brake controller obviously, but the 06 6.0 will have that factory and it's a nice unit. EGR can be deleted for under $200 now days. Headgaskets, I'm not so sure I'd even worry about it on a stock truck, but if you have the money to do it, I would. That can also be done cheap, if you can do the work yourself, and NO you don't need a lift to remove the cab, but it would be easier.

I agree, an Oasis report is a list of warranty work done @ Ford. Any Ford dealer should be able to get you this if you have the VIN.

There's a good discussion going on over at PSN about this, and realistically low fuel pressure probably doesn't really kill them as fast as not changing the oil regularly. However you are right, fuel pressure would be an important one to watch. A fuel pressure gauge is a must. It will lose a TON of power on lower fuel pressure.

That's an easy fix... My truck starts down below 0 without being plugged in no problem. Good batteries and a properly functioning FICM would do your father in law wonders. For someone offering so much advice on a 6.0, I'd figure you know about some of the MOST common problems with them and know how to fix it no?

Going through turbos IS from not driving enough. These trucks need to be WORKED. If they sit, or idle for long periods of time the vanes on the turbo will corrode/rust and start sticking, they like to be worked. If it must idle, wiring in the high idle feature takes all of 15 minutes... locks it in at a 1200rpm idle and locks the torque converter. This will also prevent wet stacking. Ford also has a newer flash out that cycles the turbo vanes at idle to prevent sticking. I have this on my truck...

Agreed, but any truck regularly towing a 44' trailer is going to need work. With an auto Dodge, he'd probably have to step up to a built trans right off the bat. That will run about the same as bulletproofing a 6.0 if he was paying someone to do the work. A bunch more time? How long do you think it takes? You make it seem way more difficult than it is. I guess cummins is for the lazy guys who don't know how to turn wrenches???

Again, Oasis is just the warranty report from Ford. Tells you what has been done.

Chris..

$22k sounds like a lot for this truck honestly. You can find one already bulletproofed for that price... search the forums.

The lb7 is a decent truck, but lighter and not as solid as the Ford, chassis wise. They also seem to go through injectors for no apparent reason... even more than 6.0's.

The 07 might be a good choice, is it a dually? What's the cost on that? That will also need things like gauges and probably trans work hauling anything that heavy.

Welcome to DB.
