Default 00 powerstroke dies intermittently

Ok, a buddy has a 00 stroke dually that died on him. He was low on fuel so he filled it up and still no start. Dropped the tank and the suction screen or whatever is in there was pretty bad, falling apart. Put on a new one. Also changed fuel filter. Truck started good and ran good for awhile. Now it will start and run maybe 5 minutes then run like crap and die. Starts up after cranking awhile and will die again. Won't run for 5 minutes without dying. Thoughts?

Check the fuel pressure... I would bet you have a clogged line or fubar pump.

Yeah, that's my thought. I'm gonna check it tomorrow. Was gonna today but my gauge was bad so I had to get another. Is there another screen on the suction of the pump or is it just the one in the tank and the fuel filter?

Should be just the one in the tank, but there are also mixing chambers inside the pickup that can clog...

Best bet is to delete all that crap and just extend it to the bottom of the tank, then reattach the foot. Then add a small diesel rated filter pre pump.

Yeah, the filter is new, first thing I tried. One thing, when I unscrewed the filter the housing wasn't completely full of fuel. Not sure if it should be, I know the cap goes in there a bit so it will displace some fuel. The fuel was maybe 1/2-3/4" from the top. And I was wrong on the year. It's an early 99 if that matters. Made in feb of 98
