Default 2001 Cummins overheat !?

On my way home tonight, I noticed my temp gauge trying it's hardest to reach the wrong side of the gauge cluster. Odd I thought to myself, when all the sudden " Ding ", Check engine light and no power ( DTC 118 and 217 ).

So i pull over, and popped the hood. Looked down and found my water pump leaking all over the place, and the pulley walking back and forth. I only replaced this pump not a year ago, but it wasn't a cummins factory pump ( my mistake, i know )

I'm curious if it has(d) another problem with it also, Could it by any way have a headgasket problem and over pressurized the cooling system and spit the water pump gasket out ? Plausible ???

How does one verify a blow head gasket ? Should i just fix the water pump / t-stat first then drive it ? or run down and just do it all ? ( altho i am short on cash, if i pull the head it's getting head studs: it's the only way to go )

Thanks in advance
Nick

My understanding as long as ur oil and coolant isn't being mixed then gasket should be fine. U can use ether to check for air gaps but be careful don't use too much. I would put bets on you just got a bad pump.

There would be signs of a blown headgasket, such as coolant trails down the side of the block, or coolant in the oil, or excessive white smoke out the exhaust. I agree with the above you probably got a bad water pump. I would throw a new original equipment water pump on it and see what happens.
