Smoke is just one side of the coin .... the other is emissions. Some cities in Germany have introduced a rule that driving through designated areas, typically the centre, is banned for vehicles without a certain colour badge. The get the badge (green, yellow, red, which equals to the various emission classes defined) one would have to present a report certifying the emission class. - My old ´94 would not even get a red patch, hence certains cities are just a no-go for me now .....

Cant you get around it right now in NY because it is not an inspection item so why the hell can I get ticketed for it. If it was an inspection item I would understand. Thats gonna be my excuse since this is happening right around my town

Right now if you are pulled over for black smoke and you are tested with an opacity meter, you will be fined.

For 1991 and newer model years, any opacity meter reading over 40% is illegal. It is the law.

New York City and other counties are already testing this for a NY Inspection. Other states are following suit.

On Friday I ordered a new opacity meter, New York state requires you to purchase a specific model.
