Front Oil Seal Install Questions

Front Oil Seal Install Questions
Since I have my 12v down I figured it's time to replace the leaky front oil seal so tonight I pulled the gear cover plate, dimpled the pin to make sure it wasn't going to fall out and am waiting for parts to show up tomorrow.
So as I'm cleaning things up and looking at the old seal I know that the new seal comes with a plastic holder and a speedy sleeve so my question is should I put the seal in first with the cover off or put the cover back on then put the seal in and is there a trick to getting it to seat fully and straight? I know I have to put the sleeve in before I pull the plastic holder out.
Also another basic question but do you guys put any light RTV or sealant on the cover gasket? If so what do you use and do you do both sides. The seal I pulled off looked fairly dry but want to only have to do this once. Thanks

- Using the provided installation tool, install the seal in the cover first. Using said tool ensures the seal is installed to the correct depth in the cover-plate as well as being square in it's bore
- Apply RTV to the cover-plate surface (only) if you're NOT using a gasket. No sealant required if using a gasket.
- With the plastic sleeve in the new seal, install the cover-plate (the seal is to be installed clean and dry on the clean and dry crankshaft. Do NOT oil anything!). Doing things in this sequence has the seal automatically center itself on the crankshaft before the cover-plate bolts are tightened.
- Tighten cover-plate bolts to 18ft/lbs.
- Pull out the plastic sleeve.
While you're in there, retorque the bolts associated with the gear-case and cam retainer (18ft/lbs). You may have to roll the engine cam-gear around to access all the bolts in there.

That makes sense. Thanks

Install tool not included. Where do you find one of those? I ordered my seal directly from cummins and of course it didn't come with an install tool. Any thoughts

I have a couple more questions.
Does the front seal have to recess in 1/16" of an inch on the front cover? I pressed mine in to be flush as the tool I had wouldn't allow it to go inside the cover.
Can I bump the motor over to get to the gear-case and cam-retainer bolts without screwing anything up as I can't hand roll the motor and how many of these bolts are there? I know there are two behind the cam that could be hidden according to the KDP article.
