There is only one true cure for VW shift linkages.

My wifes car is an 02 Beetle Tdi with 165k. Timing belt/waterpump wasn't anymore difficult than any other fwd 4 cylinder engine.

Only issues we have had
25k timing belt tensioner bearing-covered under warranty, new timing belt and fan belt
55k Injector pump-covered under warranty
89k Glow plug harness
Other than those 3 things I have replaced the timing belt, waterpump, tensioners, etc at 100k
Motor mount at 110k(too much dragracing)
All wheel bearings between 120k and 150k
Brakes at 100K
But all that stuff is std maintenance anyway.

Best car we have ever owned.

Only people that complain about them that I have seen bought used, poorly maintained units or didn't maintain them personally.

by law only emmision realted faults have to be viewable to any OB2 scanner law. all other faults and systems can be kept a secret and you will either go to a dealer or get a vag com
