There is no secret key trick or anything like that unfortunately. You can always buy a Vag-com?

how bout 1.6 questions, can you do them too? if so mine is leaking coolent out of the overflow, and running slightly warm, just a hair above the middle line, any idea what that may be, im hoping its not a popped head gasket, i think it would get warmer then its getting if it was, any other suggestions, and also the tranny is hard to get into 1st and second, i replaced the shift linkage bushings but i have 4 tiny black ones left over and not a clue where they go, its still sloppy though, didnt help much, whats my next move there

Of course! I know quite abit about the older ones as well, probably more. VW still has the coolant bottles available, about $30 bucks if I recall, had to replace mine on my 78 wabbit. The bottle is larger, has a great capacity. It could be running a little warmer cause of the cracked coolant bottle not allowing the system to pressurize correctly. I would recommend replacing the thermostat with a 180 deg and replacing the fan switch with a lower one. I believe the fan kicks on around 210-215 to hot, to late in my book. The shift linkage has always been a problem! Dubdoc posted a link for a nice upgrade to the linkage, I'll try and find it. Service the trans and see if that helps with the hard shifting into 1st/2nd. Go down to a GM dealer and pick up a couple quarts of the GM syncromesh fluid, it has whale oil in it and works great!

You can't use a generic OBD-II scan tool? I did with our 2002 with a Snap-On Scanner......'98 should be OBD-II compliant (By Law).

BUT Vag-Com is the way to go if you can find someone that has it......do a search on here...i think i posted up a list of folks with Vag-Com....could be one close to you.

EDIT....here is the locator....
