beginner pistol
A large frame 357 revolver.
Why?
Revolvers are simple to use and they don't have parts jumping back at you every time you pull the trigger.
Start with 38 specials. Mild recoil in a large frame and accurate.
Once you master the 38s and get board, then you can start shooting 357s.
Practical.

I got a 9mm for my first handgun and really like it. Not as cheap to feed as a .22, but cheaper than most others that I've seen, still gives good feedback without breaking your wrist. Lotsa fun to rapid fire (while observing reasonable safety rules, of course)
Ruger makes a good cheap pistol, around 300 bucks, dont buy a Hipoint they are JUNK.. if you can find a FEG JKP-HP its a Browning Hipower Clone and they are good guns for the price, they have a couple on Gun Broker, around 250 bucks you wont be disapointed with those... But CZ-75 are REALLY Nice, but their around 600 bucks.
I just can't get use to the grip angle on Glocks. Always shooting high. Springfield XDs have the same grip angle as the good old 1911. Something I have a few (million) rounds on.
But I will always say, a revolver is the best place for anyone to start.
