Let me clarify on this a bit. The SPAS 12 does not meet federal laws for importation do to some features. What guns were here before the ban are ok to own. Was yours here before or after? Anything gun related that requires you to be sneaky is most likely illegal.

I don't understand you guys.

It's completely legal for me to possess it in non-Chicago Illinois, correct? As far as I can tell I need no papers on it because it's a shotgun. Do I need papers due to its being banned for importation?

Would I need a slip of paper that says it was here before importation was banned? Were they all registered at a federal level?

I think we all got hung up on the full auto part. Lets go back to your first post...

the first thing to do would be call the local PD with the serial number document this well, who youtalked with and what they said. If its not stolen then start the process for your state to own it. In VA we have no paperwork on non FFL transfers. Your state may and likely does differ.

B. Can it be made into a decent firearm and what'd it cost?
I've never shot or handled one. I hear they are bulky, unreliable, and heavy. That's just what I've been told though, take it for what its worth. Also the early models had a saftey issue, something about the saftey level breaking and making the gun discharge when ever its was manipulated, there was a recall on this.

C. Is it possible for a SPAS 12 to be converted to full auto and what do I do if the one I found is full auto?

I don't know if its possible but it is VERY illegal. Don't even think about it. If the one you find is FA call your local ATF office immediately, this is not something you want to play around with.

I've shot a couple SPAS 12's back before they were made illegal...

Meh...nothing special other than the name & the ones I shot had functioning problems...not always, but enough that the SPAS was not a shotgun I wanted next to my bed...

Have not read all this thread....but ya know what...skip it, go get a 11/87 police model or a 870 police one or even a Benelli M4......all much better shotguns...and legal...

If he can get it legit and legal for free why not. Me personally I would sell it and buy a saiga to covert or an m4. The M4 would be cheaper.
