CATastrophe on a Cat 3516 Marine Diesel
Pics of the #4 main engine on the ship I work on. The #4 cylinder had some minor difficulties.

Injector tip failed and sheared off...

beat the snot out of the cylinder head

and the piston

which fubar 'd the liner

and cracked the crank at the journal....

which resulted in stripping the block

flipping the block and jerking out and replacing the crank....

few more crank and block pics.

Either the injector piece or a chunk of a valve got ingested by the turbo on that bank (engine has two turbos, one for each bank of cylinders) and fubar'd it as well. The engine was basically totally rebuilt with all new liners, heads, turbo's, crank, etc.
looking at the pic of the head, with three valves messed up, I would bet a valve snapped, taking the tip out and the other two valves as well...... one man sittin in a chair, thousand miles away guess.
what Ci and numbers does a cat that big put down? Considering some of the guys here have their 5.9's putting down Kenworth type HP and torque figures I'm a little curious and ya have any pictures of the ship that thing powers?

dang thats alot of damage for an injector
