And there was no 08 classic. By 08 they were all LMM NBS, it was in 07 they offered either the Classic OBS LBZ or NBS LMM.

I THINK I FOUND MY TRUCK! Found a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD CrewCab short bed 4x4 with 66,036 on it, dealer wanted 29k for it on the window, i pulled into look at it and the truck is really clean, dealer came out and with only asking if i liked the truck and me replying "yes" he knocked it down to 26k, so friday i am going back and he's gonna let me listen to it run and take it for a drive then talk about my trade in and about a loan, since i am young with little credit, anything i should look out for on the truck while listening and driving it?
Back to the earlier topic, as much as I love Cummins, if youre lookin for immediate power without having to do a lot of mods, the Dmax is the way to go. I'm actually plannin to get an LBZ/LMM after I graduate in about a year and a half.
I have seen LBZ/LMM's make nearly 600hp and run mid 12's in the quarter with nothing but a lift pump, tranny upgrades, and a strong EFI Live tune.

What kind of longevity are people getting out of the Duramax? The Cummins has a very good reputation for lasting. The 1,000,000 mile Cummins club has quite a few entries, while Ford doesn't have many entries - and I haven't heard of any Duramaxes with high miles on them before an overhaul occurred. MTBO on GM was 200k, Ford was 250K and Dodge/Cummins was 350K. If you are going to keep the vehicle for a long time - or you put a lot of miles on, the Cummins is the obvious choice. The Duramax competes on power, but the advantages of fewer moving parts, heavier duty parts and more bearings to spread the load really help out when it comes to longevity. If you only keep the vehicle for 100k miles, it probably doesn't matter to you. If you plan on keeping it longer - it may affect your decision.

The highest mileage Cummins I have ever seen is about 400k-500k miles, there are higher mileage ones out there, but they are rare. Heck even the donor truck I bought had 400k, and the engine had to be rebuilt at 350k miles. And before you start to say the truck was mistreated, the pump, intake, and even the exhaust were bone stock.
But in the end, yes, I do believe a Cummins engine will generally last longer than a Dmax or PowerStroke.
