Can't decide on a truck!!!! please help!

Default Can't decide on a truck!!!! please help!

Ok, well first off, I do not own a diesel yet. this will be my first, but i know a good amount about them and have been around them a good bit since all my friends drive and pull with them. I go to truck and tractor pulls like crazy, I'm in love with the sport and diesel pickups. (also if they made a cologne that smelt like Diesel fuel, i would wear it ) But anyways. I've been going to pulls with my friends and learning about the trucks for about 6 years now, got into them when i was 14. i wanted my first truck to be a diesel but my parents would not allow it. I was handed my fathers 04 taco at 17 years old. Well i have gotten a full time job, savin my money and this spring will finally be my time to buy my own. Now to the point of this post.

All my friends drive dodge's. Its what I'm familiar with, The 5.9 to be specific. But i want a newer truck. And i would like some info from people more experienced than me as i do not know everything.

So I'm trying to decide between a 2007-2009 Dodge 6.7 or a 2006-2008 Duramax

I am looking to mod more towards the racing side of it and i hear cummins motors are real quick when it comes to tuning for racing. But the v8 Dmax is a powerhouse aswell in the right hands. both will need tranny upgrades so not worried about that, Im lookin for info more towards what i can do with each motor like programmer and other mod's, pro's and con's of building each motor, and what other preventive work i will need to do in order for the trucks to handle the Horsepower.

Also I've heard D-max's blow alot of head gasket's which is a concern, would like someone to touch up on that if possible. Sorry the thread is so long guys, ive just been doing research and reading alot and question after question have been collecting in the back of my head. So any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I am a cummins fan but the D-max will hold there own

as far as the 6.7L if it has all the DPF BS on it they run pretty well but if you junk that get a exhaust and tuner with a clutch (if manual) they will haul some MAJOR ***

if you want to race the D-max EFI live is awesome and we offer custom tunes that will blow your mind

either is a good choice

I have heard great things about the D-max with the urea injection VRS the actual DPF system

I would remove the DPF **** as soon as i get the truck, I have already thought about that

I'd say for a sub $10k build, a dmax is the ticket. there is SO much potential. With a rediculous buildup, a cummins will probably take it (SHUT UP bobcat67). Driving a bone stock dmax is just friggen sweet. its just awesome. As long as you build up the trans, it will hold what you throw at it assuming you don't do some crazy *stuff* in EFI live. If you want to build a motor ground up with a bunch of billet parts, you might want a cummins. otherwise, a dmax would be the go fast setup.

Also, if you wanna go fast on the track, you gotta get an auto. don't get fooled by the people saying a manual can be shifted just as fast. With the money I've spent on transmissions and a clutch and 10% more savings overall, I could have bought a goerend and had a fast truck.

now i have heard alot of people talk about stacking Quadzilla and ppe hot on Dmax's over Efi, and that efi has alot of software to learn, How difficult is efi to learn and what are some pro's/con's?

My comment is really basic.
Buy what you like, plus can afford to buy AND fix if it breaks.

A mechanical injection Dodge truck from 1989-1998 (VE, P-7100) is usually fairly inexpensive and much less likely to be super expensive to fix.
A few hours playing with the pumps gets you enough HP gains to kill trannies, so they are a good starting point.
Reliability is outstanding, compared to later E/C models.

Yes, i do know 12v's are great motors, my friends pulling truck is a 2001 ram 2500 with a 12v swap, excellent truck, but i want something newer that doesn't have 100k on it, I've already been pricing both trucks and I'm lookin to spend 29-32k for the dodge and around 34-36k for the D-max, those prices don't bother me when the truck is gonna last me practically forever, i keep up on all oil changes, and other maintence work, i take very good car of my trucks, my taco is in show room condition and its got 128k on it and has been through 6 ohio winters.

But between the 6.7 and the 2006-2008 Dmax motors, i believe are the LBZ and LMM, which would give me the best performance, i love the styles of both trucks, looks having nothing to do with it at this point, it all comes down to which is gonna give me the bigger gain when i start to mod it.

I believe 06 was still LLY. 07-08 classic are lbz, new body style 08 is LMM.

How do the LMM motors perform after all the DPF **** is gone? And what problems do they normally have? And Between the 6.7 and the LMM which motor would give me the best performance when i start to mod them?

And one question i still have about the Dmax that no one has said anything about is, Do the new LMM motors eat headgaskets? I've heared the Dmax likes to pop them, would like to know more about that if possible.

if you push them enough they will pop a gasket. i have a 08 cummins and it popped too.
