Default What is GTL and why .... info

GTL

The conversion of natural gas into liquid fuel through the Fischer-Tropsch process.

GTL Fuel for transport, in particular, is a clear, clean fuel, virtually free of sulphur and aromatics and has a very high cetane number. Cetane number is a measure of fuel combustion quality – the higher the cetane number, the more complete the combustion. GTL Fuel has a cetane number of 75-80, much higher than the typical refinery diesel range of 45-50
GTL Fuel has a large number of benefits for both regulators and fleet operators. It can be used in conventional diesel engines, but provides significantly lower emissions of local pollutants, such as particulates, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, even when compared to so-called 'sulphur-free' diesel.

Emission Benefits

GTL Fuel significantly contributes to the reduction of local emissions, although percentages vary by vehicle type and test condition: light duty vs. heavy duty; Euro-3 vs. Euro-4. For example, emissions benefits for 100% GTL Fuel in a trial of Volkwagen Golf cars in Berlin in 2003 using a current modern (Euro-3) light duty engine and compared to current European diesel are approximately:
* particulates 26% lower
* nitrogen oxides 6% lower
* hydrocarbon 63% lower
* carbon monoxide 91% lower

GTL Fuel in the race formulation, enabling the fuel to burn more cleanly and efficiently than conventional diesel.

So lets GTL.................. or what else....

Default biodiesel vs GTL

Biodiesel has to be made of a percentage of plants or waste from animalremains . there will not be enough with our current consumption. however GTL from natural gas has a great potential because there is more natural gas than oil available !!!!!!!!!

The first diesel ever was designed and build by Rudolf Diesel ( and not Vince Diesel ) to run on PPO from peanut oil. so you see were it's comming from . we lost our route on the way
a question for dieselminded, is it possible to get a wite smoke pipe for me when i am on line, and not only because i am Dutch ........

Sorry the online status icons are not member specific .

I agree that natural gas is the best bet , for a while there it was all about ethanol , that made our food costs sky rocket , it seems they have all but bailed on that idea , now its all about hydrogen. seems like they want to skip the GTL all together

DM,

Skip GTL......... and who is they ?? Is this your point of view or real info ?

Worldwide Shell and BP are building very large and new plants to produce this in very large quantities. Also scandinavian producers are producing increasing volumes.
How about the US . You have enough natural gas around the US . Why go to Irak for your energy ?

Dieselengines run better on GTL than Diesel and normal gas thats for sure !! The audi le mans racer proved this to be so. winning more races to come.

Or are you oldfashion overthere and / or are you afraid of new things to come ?
As i see it you DieselBombers go for power ......... or is it smoke so GTL should give you better performance with less effort.
Also you write that diesel is upcomming due to 30%+ fueleconomy.............

Im just stating whats appears to be the latest in future automobiles , information from various media outlets . What i want is cheap fuel dont really care how they do it .

From my point of view , at the beginning of this year everyone was all for biodiesel , then our food costs sky rocketed , so it was back to the drawing board , i have not heard of GTL until just now other than a few comments here and there saying "It would be nice if we could just use natural gas" , insted it seems to me that hydrogen fuel cells are whats gotten everyone intrest . and personally if it was Natual gas Vs Water & Sun as a future fuel i think i would move my chips on to Hydrogen , where as natural gas is here and now we should be using it until we perfect hydrogen fuel cells.

American media is Tooting the hydrogen horn and not GTL , its not nessacary my opinion but facts

Rather our focus on a new energy will change is a guessing game
