yep relay, i took mine to a shop and the quoted me 500 for glowplugs and a relay and that it needed to be done. I wasnt going to pay 500 so i replaced the glow pulgs and tried to start it, turns out all it was was a 30 dollar relay. all the plugs i pulled out looked new but sense i went that far i figured i should replace them anyway

really csipsd? you want to stand by your comment of worn injectors will not affect cold start issues? injectors are everything on a diesel engine. you cannot have a fully functioning diesel engine on worn injectors. try reading the other posts first and you will the problem still occurs around 80 degrees. you will also find he already replaced the relay. if the problem still occurs around 80 degrees its not glow plugs. no diesel needs glow plugs around 80 degrees. you sir are incorrect.

Have you ever seen a PSD injector? Ever held one in your little hand?

A HPO issue, a IPR issue, a ICP issue, can all cause a hard start, but worn injectors will not cause a hard start when cold.

Get a scanner on it when cold, check for ICP pressures and IPR duty cycle. The injectors will not fire until there is 400 psi of high pressure oil. At Idle you should have 600psi +- 100 of HPO at 5-9% duty cycle...

my friends 99.5 had 3 bad injectors and where i live now it is getting into the 20's. would fire once you circulated the glows 3 or 4 times. im no master at these things but i never seen it fail starting because of one injector.

Worn injectors on a 7.3 PSD will not cause cold start issues, so long as you can build 400icp pressures the injectors will fire and if the motor is warm enough it will run.

What does fuel prime have to do with starting on ether? The truck will run with no fuel when you spray ether, it is replacing the fuel load...

Is 400 the absolute minimum?

Just curious why I see around 1500ish / 16-20% during crank, and 4-500 / 9% at idle.

To the OP, assuming you're still running the stock turbo, how do the fins on the compressor wheel look?

Wore out injectors will cause no/hard start on a 7.3 and 6.0 they get scored internally or varnished up internally or just plain wore out and the thick engine oil has trouble with the moving parts inside the injector.

I have several fleet trucks that the fleet managers are hesitant to put injectors in due to the high cost of replacement. So they either have to plug them in, or let them idle for 10 - 15 minutes in the morning till they clear up enough to be driven.

I currently have a 6.0 diesel in my bay exhibiting this concern - #4 cylinder contribution low when cold.

[QUOTE=Big Angry Hillbilly;445165]Wore out injectors will cause no/hard start on a 7.3 and QUOTE]

Big, with the hard starting that I'm having, will codes be thrown that I could read or would this have to be diagnosed at a shop?
