Default E4od Trans troubles

Bought a Trans with 50k on it, money is tight these days. Put it in my truck. (95 f350 powerstroke) Trans came out of a 97 f350. Had maybe 40 miles on the Trans myself and now 4th gear slows the truck down till 35 mph. What went bad? The Trans or computer issue? When it first happened I did notice done smoke inside the cab.

sounds like the clutch for 4th gear is hosed

smoke tells me that most likely that clutch wasnt engaging all the way and it slipped until it got hot enough to start smoking.

How does it shift through all the other gears? when you say it slows down the 35mph, does rpm go up or down or stay the same?

Shifts like a normal ford Trans, rpm in 4th is normal like it locks into 4th gear but something's binding inside and when I stab the throttle it'll downshift to 3rd and be normal till it try's to go into 4th. I've been keeping overdrive off

so when it shifts into 4th, it'll start pulling engine rpm down and put it under a good load?

ok

I'm going to say this is just isolated to your overdrive/direct drive clutch or the planetary in that set. What I'm thinking is; something in the planetary is binding to the point where the clutch for over/direct drive can't hold anymore, it starts slipping and and smoking.

either way, the transmission needs to come out and apart to really see what's going on.

If I keep it overdrive off, it's fine just always wound out. Looks like the trucks heading to the tranny shop in the near future..

yea just try not to keep it wound up too too long, i dont care what anyone says, it's not good for a 7.3.

but my opinion it's just one part giving you trouble, let us know how you make out!

take it to someone who knows these transmissions... It's going to be more costly not doing it right the first time and doing it multiple times... Ask CSIPSD how much he has wrapped up in transmissions just in his 01...
