Default 96 powerstroke

just bought a 96 ford. 300,000 miles. when you try to start it the starter stays engaged even when you let the key go. it will not start even if you pull it. has new glow plug solenoid. as i was trying to pull start it it tryed to fire and then the tach quit working. will this thing not run with the tach not working? also on the side of the fuel bowl on the driver side that valve or whatever it is is leaking a little fuel. what is that part called so i can get another.

if there is excessive fuel in the valley of the engine it may need the lift pump replaced. but if you think its coming from the fuel bowl its probly just an o ring. is it cranking slowly or just cranking and not firing? dont crank too hard cuz its hard on the injectors on powerstrokes.

The tachometer not working indicates that the cam position sensor is bad. Verify this by reading the codes and/or just rplace the sensor. Even if I am wrong, it is still a good idea to keep a spare CPS in the glove box.

there is a little diesel in the valley of the engine. it's not cranking too fast but we also tryed to pull start it so i know we had it spinning fast enough. how much does the cam position sensor cost?

Check all your fuses... Also, try jumping the starter solenoid also and see what happens.

If the starter is staying engaged, it is a sticking solenoid. The valve (yellow if it's clean) is the fuel bowl drain, if it's leaking it needs new o-rings...it happens over time to everyone.

Definately check fuses, relays as well since the truck is new to you.

CPS's aren't too expensive...as twinboys mentioned, keep a spare in the glove box, when the CPS dies, the engine does too. If it's not cranking well on it's own, get your batteries checked as well. One, or both, weak batteries will hinder your efforts.
