Default 97 psd engine idle and boost

Hello- I am new to this forum and was hoping to get some thoughts on my engine issues. I have a 97 psd with 173,000 miles, 5 spd manual , 4wd. I have had it for about 2 years ,approx. 10,000 miles. It is basically stock but has an aftermarket exhaust ? and temp/boost gauges. On the first start up of the day it starts no problem and about 30 seconds later it starts to surge for about a minute and then idles smooth. When I start down the road it seems like there is not much acceleration, it seems really sluggish. The boost gauge does not show much . In 1st 2nd or 3rd I get 0-5 psi, I am barely getting 10 psi at 2500-2800 rpms in 4th or 5th gears. My mpg is about 12-13. Thanks for any help .

Exhaust back pressure valve. Id leave you more to work with but I am in school.
Someone will chime in and help ya soon or you can do some research on the EBPV
Not harmful or anything to worry about.

thanks for the input. I looked around for info on the ebpv and figured I might try unplugging the sensor. On the first start today I still had some surge after about 20-30 seconds, the lights dim and the volt gauge moves fromthe middle to the right about a quarter inch and back, rpms go from about 1500 up to about 1700 and back. After about 45-60 seconds the surge stopped. The gauge stayed to the right and the rpms stayed at about 1700. Acceleration did not seem as sluggish and the amount of boost was the same .

disconnect the ebpv, there's a 2 pin connector on the intake side of the turbo, towards the bottom. that should take care of your boost issue and possibly the surging, if not, look at your ICP sensor.
