E4OD problem
E4OD Problem Hello, I have a 1997 Ford f350 dually, it has 220K miles and I was coming back from delivering a car when I noticed the torque converter wasn't locking up. I babied it back to my town, about 30 miles, and stopped at an Advance Auto Parts to check my fluid, when I pulled in to the parts store parking lot, I smelled trans fluid, I got out of the truck, and looked under it to see if there was a leak, and I saw it dripping trans fluid, the truck was idling. I checked to make sure it wasn't a trans line I had fixed a month earlier, the trans lines were extremely hot, but not leaking, it was leaking from the bottom of the bell housing, coming out from under the dust cover. About the time I stood up, there was a loud "POP" and a big puff of smoke, then the fluid started streaming out of the transmission, a stream about 1/2 the diameter of my baby finger! I called my friend, and we towed it to my shop. I suspected a clogged vent, and figured maybe that caused it to blow the front seal, I pulled the tranny, and the front seal did not look real bad, and the back of the converter is bone dry! I did see some mud dauber mud in a few holes in the side of the trans, but I don't think the vent can be clogged really, as it has the "rattle cap" type vent. I am not thinking the front seal was the problem though, I have never heard a trans make that "pop" sound before, I was hoping for a clogged vent, but now........not quite sure what happened! But if anyone has run into this before, any info would be a big help! Thanks!
