Default Transmission Issues

I have recently run into an issue with the 48re on my 2006 megacab. For about two weeks I have been smelling warm trans fluid, but was unable to locate a leak (didn't see anything on the ground). Today at work it smelled hot again and when I went to look there was a damp area on the top of the trans case. It appears to be located where the trans meets the tail housing, but not where the trans meets the transfer case. When I checked the fluid last week it appeared to be foamy. I have also noticed a slight problem where it will hunt for a gear under light throttle, only when its cold, and under no load. Shifts great with some weight behind it! I need to fix the problem before it becomes a real problem, but I am over warranty by like 6,000. I have also been following maintenance schedule A (per dealer in NC), when I should have been following schedule B, which basically puts me behind the curve on trans service and two times over on all diff fluids. What do I need to do? I will probably try to do as much as I can myself! I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Anybody have some ideas??
I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

here is a TSB out for the hunting under light throttle. RSWORDS posted it up. if it looks damp in where you are saying there is an overflow port on the top of the tranny if it gets hot and boils the fluid it'll expand and go out of that port. also if it looks foamy do you mean air foam or milky foam like water contamination? i'd drop the pan, replace the fluid (ATF+4 even if it calls for +3) filter and see what it does. alos look to see if the converter has a drain plug in it and drain the converter too.

hope this helps

The foam is air foam, not water. The fluid does not smell burnt, is there a possibility that the additives have started to wear out in the trans fluid? I am going to change the fluid and filter ASAP.

yeah, I'm at 42K. The guy at the dealership told me to use the schedule A as long as I wasn't towing heavy everyday! It was my fault for not switching over to the Schedule B after I realized nothing was getting changed out. I'll be catching up on a ton of past due maintenance this weekend.

Foam indicates the fluid level is too high. This can cause shifting issues, as well as over heating. The dampness at the OD housing can be the OD gasket. Check for loose bolts, but unless it is dripping, I would not worry abut that much.

Sounds like you are due for a fluid change anyways. DO a change, check the bolt on the OD housing, and clean off the transmission. Let us know if it helps.

Also, if you have a scanner you can adjust the TV motor stop to the max allowed by the computer. Give me a call and I can walk you through it.
