Normally if the egr cooler ruptures it is because the oil cooler is so clogged that not enough coolant gets through to properly cool it. If you live somewhere that does not smog check then you ought to do a EGR delete to save you problems in the future. When you do the oil coole rebuild make sure you add a coolant filter kit to prevent the new oil cooler from clogging again.
You can get away with this for a little while but unplug the EGR valve to keep the water loss a minimum, if too much coolant leaks then you could have hydrolock condition

thanks! yes I went ahead and got a new dorman oil cooler to go with the new dorman egr cooler, I wish i had money for the upgraded ones since one day i will be back in an emissions crazy state, this is to tide me over till i can make sure nothing else too major is wrong with this truck since i just rolled the dice on it and bought a high mileage company work truck. it does appear to be in great shape other than these issues. the cost of the dorman parts was super cheap on amazon and I have had great luck with dorman in the past. I do plan on a coolant filtration system down the line, I just need this thing to get me to point a to point be without screwing me to much, I love to learn and work on new vehicles and this is my first diesel. I will clean the turbo and possibly the intake while its out and do a good coolant flush in the end. thanks for the reply. after that one time coolant out the exhaust i drove it home slowly and no coolant leaks now so hope i dont make it worse till it gets fixed this weekend

do yourself a big favor and just leave the EGR valve unplugged till you go back to the "Green" state.. you will get a CEL but it won't hurt anything and won't make you go in limp mode or anything. I had mine unplugged for 200K but with the early 04 I didn't even get a CEL. when I finnaly did a complete delete the EGR cooler still looked new and had no buildup in it. The cooler will not flow exhaust with it unplugged.

so just unplugging the egr valve keeps it form working all together as if it is "deleted"? I tried to ask someone that but they said no. I spent so little on the new egr cooler and oil cooler that i hope this at least keeps it good for long enough to get it paid off and see if this truck is worth more upgraded parts in the far future, I really wanted the 7.3 or the 5.9 cummins but this is what i found on short notice.

but dont get me wrong, i am very pleased with this trucks performance when it is driving fine, i knew it needed work when i got it and thats why i got it cheap, still love my ford even though its in need of some fix in!

With the valve unplugged exhaust can not/will not/ flow through the cooler and the cooler will only rupture if it has hot gasses going through it and not enough coolant to keep it properly cooled. There are programmers to turn the CEL off but unless the little light on the dash bothers you I wouldn't worry about it. Do yourself a favor and save up for the coolant filter, they are around $140 and easy to install but it will save the oil cooler in the future.
