Default ZF-5 Swap Noise

I just finished up my ZF5 swap today. New throwout bearing, clutch, fork, pilot bearing, etc. Only thing I left alone was the stock flywheel because it was great. I fired it up and it is pretty noisy. Noise goes away when the clutch is pressed, or he RPM's are brought up. Driving the noise goes away after taking off. I am afraid there is something wrong with this trans. HELP???

Sounds normal to me, that's how mine sounds, and I used to work at uhaul in the mid '90's and I think all our diesels with a manual 5 speed sounds like that. I can't remember the different transmissions we ran. One was a zf5 but the other in some of the internationals was a steal cased trans that had a separate bell housing. And I believe they all had that noisy bearing. How's reverse in that? Mine I have to fight with to get it into reverse.

All gears are great. Shifts smooth, goes into gear great and stays in gear. A little noise taking off but goes away after that.

Thank You for the reply

Not hijacking the thread, but, powerstrokin you said its normal to have to fight for reserve every once in a while for the zf5? Just want to make sure since that's my problem

You are still using a DMF flywheel? What usually causes the extra noise is the conversion to a SMF. My truck makes a little extra noise with the clutch released, but not like yours. The extra sound when taking off is usually attributed to the SMF as well, commonly known as gear rollover. Have you checked the fluid level, overfilling the transmission is a common practice in helping to subdue the noise. I added an extra quart to mine, had to put in in through the shifter hole though.

syco, what did you need to convert from dual mass to single? Are the conversion kits just matching up the flywheel with the right clutch or what?
