ZF-5 Swap Noise
#11
I work at O'reilly auto parts part time, they have a listing for the SMF clutch and flywheel assembly. It was made by SACH's, which is a division of ZF so I assumed it would work pretty good. The main thing about the conversion is that the DMF has springs and the clutch disc doesn't. When you switch to a SMF, you getting a solid flywheel and a clutch disc that has springs instead. Lot's of places will sell the flywheel and clutch together as a kit, I was going to get a south bend unit but my discount at work made the SACH's parts look even better.

Well maybe I need to pull the inspection cover off. I just looked at the surface of the flywheel before I bolted everything back up. About 5 years ago this motor was completely rebuild and maybe at that time they upgraded to a SMF. Would you be able to run a SMF with the stock 4 speed. ? I'm new to these transmissions. I know how to fabricate and get motors to make power. First time messing with these trans combinations.

What I was saying was the noise is normal at idle, the fighting for reverse is common. I've seen a parts supplier who sells an upgrade kit for the zf5 reverse. On my truck it's actually so worn, from the previous owner, that I usually have to roll it a hair to get it to fall in reverse and actually grab. Most of the time if I go to reverse it actually grinds and I have to keep trying, usually through it into first and just let it drag and roll me an inch or two and then through in reverse. My fourth syncro's going too so I have to double clutch it or she'll grind too. Going to have to overhaul my tranny soon.

I went up to the local o'reilly's the other day to check out how much a new flywheel would be, the DMF came out to $1089. That was quickly shunned, and I asked the guy working at the time what I would need to convert over to a single, he said he has no idea, and that I might be able to find a not-so-expensive but still expensive conversion kit online. My question is still is I were to buy the single mass flywheel from o'reilly's, then I would just need to buy the matching clutch for that flywheel and I should be in business for everything to work? If that's so I might buy that instead of doing my rust-oleum paint job this month
