I got my first truck a few months ago, and decided I would join here after I looked around for a little. You guys seem to have a really friendly forum going here. Anyways, i just got the truck, It had a mouse nest in the air filter, it ran alright with it in there, then we cleaned it out and now it stalls when you hit the clutch sometimes.
What are some tips to keep this truck going? What should I do? oilchange is on the list. It runs alright, though it is hard to start sometimes. It also needs exhaust to pass inspection. I turn 16 on december 29th so the race is on.
I am definitely not a power freak, but mileage is important to me. I wanted a tacoma, but I like this better I am getting a new air filter, along with an e-brake cable. I have to go to the junkyard next week and me an dad are going to get corners, and floor pan. If we can't find any, then I guess I'll end up buying them.
We are going to make a flatbed, I should be able to get 200 bucks for the cap and the bed, then I won't have to patch the fenders. I am just going to leave the carpet out, and bed liner the inside. RIght now, carpet is basically all that is there... Inside is really loud, but it doesn't bug me too bad. But will the fact that I won't have insulation make it louder or hot? I work on a bunch of farms, so carpet would just get pigged up. What should I do right now to make sure everything is working good. My main concern is the engine, because it is going to look bad until I get more funds anyways.

Eventually, i want a flatbed, stacks, radio (one that works, the speakers are all blown, and the receiver sucks), thinking about turning the a/c pump into a compressor, front bumper, swap the bench seat for a pair of bucket seats, get the cab painted. I am 16, I work on a lot of farms, but it shouldn't get beatup too bad because every farm has a beater or two. I am not going to offroad it, but It has to be good in snow. Also, why is my power steering pump so noisy? It makes the weirdest noises... And, Could you see any drawbacks for putting in a solid axle? I really am not liking the dual arm thing up front. It looks like a live axle, but it isn't... I can't remember what it is called. The f350's of the same year had a solid front axle right? how bad would it be to drop one under it?

Welcome. I'm a newbe on here as well, but have been working on cars, trucks and tractors for--well, a long time. Your first car or truck is always memorable, mine a 47 Studebaker. We've all faced your situation. Lot's of things to do, but limited funds. Write the words "First things first" on a 3x5 card and look at it often. The first things that need to be fixed should be safety, then reliability related. Looks can wait. Modifications should be last, but go ahead and put them on your "dream list". Change the fluids and filters as soon as you can. Get to understand your truck, especially the 7.3 diesel. Read every post and blog you can. Find a good mechanic in your home town and seek advice--it's cheap. Drive safe and good luck.

Good to have you on here. Like said above, work on reliability first. I would definitly change all the fluids and filters(oil and fuel filters) as a start. Junk yards are great, my first trucks body was built completely by used parts.
