Hooking 2 batteries in series you connect the neg - form battery A to the pos + of battery B with the neg - from B going to ground & pos + from A going to the pos + cable. That doubles the voltage but retains the same amperage.
I have considered running 4 6v batteries in my truck for greater storage capacity.
To answer the ? about the jumper cables: No
Both batteries are connected to the same ground so it doesn't really matter as long as you go neg- on one & pos+ on the other. All that hooking to the different batteries does is distribute the load so your not sucking off one battery.

Exactly, and for you DMax guys there is no primary or secondary battery. They are both tied to the same junction point.

By George I think I've got it, maybe, I hope, Kinda anyway.

Rest easy guys, there is no way to throw 24 at someone if the batteries are tied in parellel, such as ours and every other dual battery light truck out there. The battery tie just won't allow 24 volts because they are tied neg to neg and pos to pos. Your cable placement doesn't matter providing you hook up a pos and a neg jumper cable to pos and neg lug in any combination. Like uncle said, do it how you feel comfortable, just don't let the vehicles run tied together.

Running 24 volts shouldn't damage any wiring. It would damage the bulbs & that is not a given, I have seen 12v bulbs run for a couple of days in a 24v system. Amperage is what determins the size of the wire, not voltage.
