i have a hard time charging ppl for a tow because i cant count the number of times ive been pulled out of a snow bank or mud hole for free. just remember if you get it stuck you hook the chain up.

i will haul stuff for ppl too but i just charge them for the price of fuel or if its only a short distance i will do it for free. i just like to help ppl (plus its nice to have some favor stored up for the day all **** goes to hell)

 

This post is reflective of a nice Midwestern attitude. The pay for tow is more in tune with higher population density areas.

 

Well I guess this thread went to hell in a handbasket. I don't "make a living" hauling stuff because I already have a job but a weekend run with something or moonlighting so to speak isn't unheard of for me. Usually I do it more as a favor for contractor friends that are tied up and will pay for my time and fill my tank. Maybe I take for granted the amount of contacts I have I don't know. So good luck in your search and keep it between the lines.

 

They hook it, I check their handi-work, and correct them. If they don't want to do the work, I'll keep driving. If they wanna do something dumb, they will. I don't NEED to help them. I'm not doing it for $$. But, if they pass me 20 when they are out rather than the 300 the local tow guys charge, its $ in my pocket and theirs. The 300 is for an "easy" tow, no winch. Bit of a monoploy here.

 

I tried that factory thing; made me claustrophobic.

 

I cant charge for a tow whether its in a ditch or in a mud pit...

But I have made decent money hauling stock trailers and anything on a goose neck in my free time. The best way is to just let people know you are willing to haul their sh*t and once you do a few and dont wreck anything haha they will always tell their friends. Works best with people who haul their horse and stock trailers with gassers because they do fine around town but most dont like to tow across the state.

Just dont make the mistake of hauling someone elses loaded trailer to canada with live animals...THAT was a 7 hours of inspection mistake

 

I haul horses, hay, and whatever else I can get in the GN Horse/Stock Combo. Mostly the east coast, but we go anywhere for the right price. Its a legit business, but its sort of a side gig to the farm, and making shavings. My truck also makes me money everyday getting me in and out of the woods.

I pull people out of the snow when we get a storm, and I rarely take payment. Most of the time I make them hook it, but if its a good looking woman... haha.

 

I'll always helped someone out. i stopped by a guy the other day that blew his tranny bout 15 miles outside of liberal with a loaded horsetrailer on. i pulled him into town for free and all. then the only tranny we could find was in amarillo so i told him if he paid for fuel i'd go down and get it and come back to liberal. and then i drove back to amarillo. anything to help somebody else out ya know. and i haul hay any chance i get.

 

I was thinking of doing something along the lines of helping people move, like fill up the back of my truck, hook up whatever trailer you want and I will haul it for a certain price depending on mileage, alot cheaper than u-haul, just something to keep me busy on weekends etc.

has anybody done this before, what is a fair price? Is it worth it?

 

Only time I ever charged to pull someone out is when my cousin called me at 3:30 at night to go pull out his friend's 2wd half ton he was "mudding" with.

As for actually pulling for a living, theres a auction barn around here that regularly hires people and their trucks to pull the auction's trailers. But, It always depends on who you know.
