IDI was mechanical injection, no ECM. Not till 1994 when powerchoke came out. Save yourself the hassle, it don't get no easier than a 12v and you'll love how the truck runs. Best of both worlds, cummins power and ford truck!

ya........ about that. A) more expensive. B) more custom needed. C) more work for the 12v

stick with an IH engine

A) possibly. did my conversion for right at $2100, and I bought motor mounts.

B) somewhat. either engine, its a conversion, its gonna be some work. depending on what tranny you use, it will still be quite a bit of work. the IDI will still need custom motor mounts (completely different truck), if you use the stock tranny it will most likely need an adapter plate, and a stand alone controller for the stock auto. throw a 12v with an NV4500 behind it and call it good.

C) like I said, its a conversion, its gonna be work. you have to understand its going to be alot more work swapping an IDI into a 99 and up truck than an older body style.

Im not knocking the IDI's, but I dont see why you would spend all that money and put all that time into a truck just to swap in an IDI. If it was a 97 or down truck, it would be a completely different story.

i wouldnt recommend doing an idi. they're tough but performance wise its not there. 7.3 or 6.0 would be best for him

Well the whole point of this thread is that he was wanting to swap in an IDI

And how do you figure a 7.3 or 6.0 Powerstroke will be easier than a 12v? Sure its going to bolt up easier but the added electrical issues are going to be a major pain compared to the mechanical 12v. If you're going Ford motor, you're probably better off selling the truck and buying a Ford that already has a diesel in it.

Ya...... About that A) no it's not, I did mine for $1500 B) not really, you'll have more crap involved putting a powerstroke in over a 12v, IDI will be easier but will still need same amount of fab work as a cummins. Not knocking the IDI, it lacks power, it's a good motor but I don't see why anyone would want one in a newer truck. C) no a 12v is simple swap if I had to do one over again I'd walk through it in a weekend. I think the hardest part is maneuvering the heavy bastard in place over anything else.

What's the last year of the 7.3 2001-02. Why don't you take your time and find a good truck with one in it?
