Just to keep things updated. The first engine I swapped (#1-V) had a verified 160k on it when I installed it, I was sad when it developed a wrist pin knock, I was upset when I pulled it and found it was a loose torque converter bolt and not a wrist pin. So installed engine #2-V with unknown mileage. Engine #2-V developed an annoying oil leak on the backside of the head gasket. Since it's simpler to pull the engine then replace the head gasket in place I've decided to pull it. In the meantime...I have started with #3-V, this engine will have everything replaced that shows wear. So far everything checks out. Hot compression test was within new factory spec, timing chain stretch is 1.5*, valves are tight. Very fresh motor. I'll be doing some power modifications on the head for this one that I will document here. I've also started building another Cherokee for a friend we will call #1-R.

This engine still has cross hatch machining in the cylinders.

Oil changes have been a real issue do to firewall clearance. The problem is the lid requires at least 6" of space straight up before it can be tilted. This has required me to loosen the trans mount and jack up the rear to tilt th engine forward enough for the lid to clear....I have finally come up with a solution....
