hi FTE Yes it is always great to be home. I am still working today. I will have some pics tonight. I stabbed the engine trans combo in the jeep this afternoon to just see what it looks like.
I am glad I did not agonize over getting the accessory mounts finished. As it turns out I will need to pretty much re-engineer the whole accessory drive system to incorporate the engine mounts, and my original location for the AC compressor on the passenger side will not work at all. The little Kubota sits WAY back there in the engine bay. I will be using the most forward bolt bosses on the block, and I might end up with some sort of a cradle underneath, but that will be a last resort. Also there is a bit of overlap on the oil pan and the fwd axle, NO interference, but about a 2" overlap. I think I can work with. Nice that the Kubota does not interfere with the steering or trackbar like on the benz
I sort of wish I had test fit the engine earlier

Just a off the wall question has anyone ever seen any engine mounts that work in tension as opposed to compression??? I could almost hang the Kubota on a set of mounts as opposed to putting the mounts under the engine
I will have some pics tonight

The idea of a mount in tension scares me a bit. We have all had motor mounts fail. If it is in tension it better have some hefty safety link built in. We have all seen or heard of people who drive a long time with "bad" motor mounts. Driving with a tension style mount would be wearing on that safety link. If it should fail the motor is falling. With a compression mount it may fail but it cannot fall.
I have built a few hot rods using the poly ends designed for suspension arms as motor mounts. They didn't see many miles. They were supporting healthy SBC engines in light weight cars. Never a failure. If the poly would have failed there was still a bolt running through the round tube the poly went into. It couldn't fall out... The rubber mounts would absorb a lot more vibration...
My 2 cents worth.

I did not make a whole lot more progress tonight. I got the engine centered, I still have not got it to final height yet. I cut the horns off the Stock XJ mounts to prep them for modification. These mounts will have to be much taller than the benz/xj. I have not measured them yet. but I bet they are going to be over 6" tall each. The engine side has to come way up and the body side has to come way down.
You guys with body on frame have an advantage here. Unibody's kind of suck
FTE I am looking for a good set of liquid filled mounts as well. I will need them ASAP. Please let me know what you find.
Here ar some pics of the governor spring on both sides for those that may not have seen where it lives. The engine sitting in the frame is petty borng I was trying to get a pic of the height difference, but the perspective did not come out very good.
Tomorrow I will start cutting steel plate for the engine side mounts.
I put my spare engine up on the table so hopefully I can fab the mounts in he shop and just move them over to the jeep. I am thinking about turning my oil filter as well.. To get the filter housing turned , you just take if off and turn it 90deg correct?
Todays pictures don't show it but I have a TON of room for a radiator and intercooler

Well it turns out that the mounts I just installed in the Ranger were the liquid mounts, #2698HY. So either they are a poor version or they just don't do well in this application. The old ones didn't seem to be liquid mounts, so now I'm really confused.

Hi FTE, thanks for the info. That is interesting? I wonder if your new mounts just need to sit and wear out for a while? Good info to know though. There are reports of guys using the 2698 on 4BT's, so maybe they are just too stiff.
For the same price I may try the 2696 mounts they came from a Ford Tempo. That sounds like they will be too small. I looked at the -96, and the -98 side by side, there is not a lot of difference in the overall size, just the narrow top end is quite a bit narrower on the -96.
Do you think you can use the MB mounts as you were thinking, without moding your mount bases???

On a side note. I found a smaller body length oil filter to fit the larger filter joint. PH3900 or wix 51602. They are about the same size as a PH8a about 5" long compared to the original Carrier oil filter 7" long. Both off the shelf at O'reilley.
I will try and rotate my oil filter housing 90 degrees tonight, and the filter will point down at the ground. Then I should have a bit more clearance to build some engine mounts

I have stopped driving it because I can't stand it, that's how annoying it is! I will try the Benz mount as soon as I'm finished with the bathroom remodel. They should fit just fine space wise, I will just have to add a limit strap to the drivers side so they don't pull apart.

FTE I am pretty Positive that you have used a Limit Strap at least a few times .

not much good to report tonight. I am going to have my work cut out for me on the engine mounts. FTE I am also thinking about Mercedes mounts, they are nice and small. Those anchor hockey puck style mounts are 6" tall and 4" Dia. I just don't have that kind of room. I can't drop too much on the frame side or I will hit the upper control arms. I think my best bet is to get the frame side set up first, then I can work on getting the engine side .
The short oil filter I found with the big thread, will not fit in the down position, So I ended up removing the angled filter housing and going straight out the side ala FTE. If I can get a small thread filter joint I can most likely go to a down filter.
