On occasion when trying to start, I get very little or no engine cranking. After several attempts it will crank and start easily.

Batteries both show 12.5 volts.

Terminals are clean.

Is there a check I can do with a voltage tester to see if the cables are OK?

Doesn't seem like a solenoid or a stuck starter problem because I get a very brief crank [maybe a quarter of a second] when it happens.

what does the batteries get pulled down to when your trying to crank

 

Don't know. I am working on this alone and cannot crank and test!

 

Borrow a load tester and load test the battery. If it's good, got a starter problem (likely the brushes), if it tests bad, needs a new battery.
