High Mileage 2001 Cummins Cutting Out
Hello,
Found your web site tonight while looking for some answers. My 2001 Ram 2500 is having a couple of problems, one is it torque converter gets stuck in lock-up and the truck studders, this only happens in OD and 3rd, so downshifting to 2nd unlocks it. It is a factory rebuilt 47RE with about 75K on it. I may try the APPS reset from Uncle Bubba postings, although the APPS is new and the problem was identical before the switch.
As for the engine cutting out it has been happening sporadically for the last 50,0000 miles. I have replaced just about every part except the ECU and wiring harness to remedy it. It has not thrown any codes and have not been able to make it happen with a scanner hooked up yet. Another problem I recently had was the 12V wire to the fuel supply pump went dead, before this happened the fuel pressure light had been flickering under hard acceleration. I spliced in a switched 12V lead to the fuel supply pump and it came back to life without the flickering light, although the cutout problem now happens more frequently. The power for the fuel supply pump comes from the ECU, I figure it must be causing the cutout as well. I am considering a remanufactured ECU right now and wanted some suggestions. Does the ECU's 12V circuit degrade over time and stop sending the proper voltage to the VP 44 also. What baffles me is when the problem is happening the truck will idle fine, it never dies completely, just seems like it wants to!
Otherwise the truck runs strong especially considering it has over 530K on the clock.
Thanks,
Rick

ECM's don't last forever and they do cause intermittent problems. If you do get on, either a new or remand, Cummins or the dealer will have to program it to the exact options to the one currently on the truck. May or may not be able to get a new harness, but a dealer or Cummins should be able to help!!

also i have seen the fuseable link fron the battery on the driver side to the fuel shut-off burn up inside and cause a interm. problem. It looks like a wire but is really a fuseable link about 4-6 inches long

no fusable link that I could find
I have a fusable link in my 2005, if the 2001 has it then I can't find it. The dealer does not list the part either. My new computer is arriving today. I will report back to let you know if it solves the problem.
Thanks,
Rick
