Default Starting Problem

Hey guys I have 1988 Chevy R20 Crew Cab Long Bed. 6.2 Diesel J Code.

replaced the glow plugs with AC Delco 60Gs last week. I know I have a fuel leak somewhere and gives me hard starts. but i can usually start it.

just over a week ago, the glow plug controller didnt turn on the first few times I tried to start it at 6am when the temp was probably in the 50s maybe 40s.

Now I drove my truck home last night and parked it just before 10PM PST. It's now ~230PM PST. I've tried starting my truck like 10 times at 15-20 seconds of cranking with at least a minute of break in between so I dont burn out the starter. but those 10 times, the glow plug controller didn't turn because I didn't hear the click and the 'wait' light didn't turn on. also it's been blowing white smoke out the tail pipes so I know the engine is getting fuel.

any help ASAP would be much appreciated as I need to go to a funeral tomorrow. and I still need to do some stuff today for it!

Thanks in Advance!
-Matt

I will look tomorrow. Where would the relay be at? I'm going to go over the wiring as best as I can.

I did use my multimeter to check that I get power to the glow plug controller when the key is in the 'on' position; and it is getting power.

"All you need is a pushbutton to activate the glow plugs solenoid. Unplug the glow plug controller and just use the pushbutton. The existing solenoid has 12 volts on the control circuit (coil) all the time (with the key on). All the controller did was ground the other side. I can not tell you which terminal is which. You will have to pull them off (the small control terminals) and probe them with a voltmeter or test light to find the ground and 12 volts. To find the ground, you need to have a cold or cool engine and the controller plugged in. That way you will have a ground thought the controller.
Just run a wire from the one that indicates ground to your pushbutton and then another from your pushbutton to ground and unplug the controller"

Thanks ebarriesi5894. I will be doing this on my 6.5. I just replaced the motor and the rings are still seating in. I find that starting cold is no problem, but once is warmed up the glow plugs dont fire(like designed) and it has a hard time lighting up. I am sure this will help!

HI
How do you know if the glow plug controler is bad? I have a 1996 6.5 and I just replaced the PMD, and it still will not start. The glow plug light comes on for about 3 seconds then goes out. If I turn the ignition of and for a minute or two I will come on for about 10 seconds then go back to 3 seconds. Is this a bad controler? PS somone said it might be the Oil sending switch? Help

the reason it stays on for 3 seconds is because when you cycle the glow plugs it stays on till it reaches its temp (10 seconds) and when you turn it off and back on its still hot so it stays on for less.

are you getting fuel? crackthe fuel filter bleeder open and turn the key on you should have fuel coming out. go from there and tell me what you get

Just now got your message. I put a new pmd on it. The lift pump seemed to stop working or at least did not draw fuel. it was loud then got quit. I had bleed the fuel line and it started. Now it falters on acceluration. I wonder if the lift pump stoped working due to the pmd failure and started working after I installed the new pmd. As far as glow plug light it now comes on for a shorter time than befor I replaced pmd. once and a while it comes on and stays on like before. Any thoughts as to why It studders on acceleration, or the short glow plug light time? PS I put a #9 calibration chip in the pmd.
Thnaks

Just got your message.
I opened the bleeder got fuel and it started. The lift pump was not working or at least not drawing fuel. It was loud then got quit. I wounder if the pmd being replaced had any affect on the lift pump not working or what caused the fuel line to not have fuel in it. Is the lift pump bad, the oil sensor bad, a leaking of air into the system, is the return check valve dad and will this happen again?

Now that it is running it hesitates on acceleration. Is the faltering a result of the lift pump, the injector pump, oil sensor, or air leak, or water in the systems? but it did not do this before the pmd failure. PS I put a #9 resistor in the new pmd.

As far as the glow plug light. I under stand what you are saying, but it stays on 3 seconds when the key is first turned on. Sometimes it comes on 10 seconds at first key turn.
Is there a trubleshooting resource; like a step by step for this?

Thanks

Bart
