Alot of Blacksmoke
Well I hate to tell you this, but your going to have to do the process of elimination.
Here is a list of what causes black smoke.
AT IDLE
restricted air intake
restricted fuel line or filter
restricted or blocked injector(s)
advanced timing
damaged or worn piston rings
BLACK SMOKE WHILE DRIVING OR UNDER A LOAD
egr stuck open
worn cam shaft
low compression
advanced timing
bad injection pump
bad fuel
blocked or restricted injector(s)
restricted fuel line or filter
restricted air in take
blocked or restricted exhaust causing excessive back pressure
let me know if I can help you more

if 6.5 filled out his signature we could figure out if he had an egr. restricated intake is pretty easy to check. you just need gaskets and rtv once your down to bolt it back up. advanced timing is very unlikely unless you had someone recently working on your pump. or timing chain could of skipped spots but thats unlikely.
we already eleminated that it was bad fuel. to check injectors i would do the drivers side first. its the easiest. when your checking the injectors thats a good time to do a compression test. when you check the passenegrs side injectors you need to heat the turbo to get the bolts loose. same thing there invovling injectors as other side.
worn camshaft i have never heard of in my life on a 6.5 unless it has a zillion miles on it. its most likely bad pump because they usually fail without codes. also when you go to clean out your intake use some brake cleaner and towel to clear it then blow out all the chunks of carbon out.
i know its winter but run a little biodiesel because that cleans your fuel system. maybe 5 percent. then if this isnt fixed by spring run 15 to 20 percent. just have a spare fuel filter handy because bio can clog those fuel filters

good way to check timing is hook up scanner like a tech 2 like they have at the dealership and check tdc offset. -1.5 to -1.94 are a good range to get it to. then set the timing to and you will have a timed engine
you got to to remember that -1.5 to -1.94 is not stock tdc offset. but if you want a little more power its a good thing to change to. nothing major but every little thing helps. you will have to request that change though because its a different number in the manual.
