Screw 1080P, if you get anything do not waste your money on 1080PPPPPPPPPPP/ Nothing is broadcasting it 1080PPPPPPPPPPP yet except for video games and blue ray DVD. I have 3 flat panel LCD's, none of them are 1080PPPPPPPPP but they all are 1080I, even still though nothing is being broadcast in a true 1080 it is all 720. When 1080PPPPP is being broadcast the only real difference you will see between P and I is the black lines and clarity of lines.
I have a 47" Samsung LCD in one of the living rooms, it has a beautiful picture at 720 (even though it is a 1080I) my daughter has a 27" Samsung LCD, it has a beautiful picture at 720 (even though it is a 1080I). In my bedroom I have a 37" LG LCD it has a beautiful picture at 720 (even though it is a 1080I).
I did not buy DLP because I wanted wall mount but if that is not the issue or a factor that is the one I would go with. Plasma is like a diesel, it is how you break them in. The older versions had limited life, the newer ones are as dependable as a LCD only cheaper per inch. (based on my research),
Samsung, Sony and LG all pretty much share some parts. If you took the Sony label of a tv and put LG or Samsung label on it you could not tell the difference. My uncle has a Vizio and I would not own one, that is MHO. Some like them though.

I'm going today to find a new tv.I was reading this thread yesterday. Last night watching tv my 60" big screen popped and went dead. Smelled hot burnt. It's 8 years old so I guess it's time to buy a new one. What are the odds to read a thread and then it happens. Oh well good info here. I still don't have a clue to what I want

I just can't bring myself to buy a new TV. The standards still aren't widely accepted, the price is way high and the reliability is horrible.
People have already forgotten how reliable TVs were in the past. The first color TV we had was a Mongomery Wards POS with a remote contro the size of a shoe box that sold for $179 when I was a little kid. Damn thing still works to this day--30 years later. Yet people buy a $2000 TV and when it dies in 4 years just go out and buy a new one--good luck getting it fixed. The repair place near me gets $350 just for diagnosing the problem, and many run 5-600 for the repair.
I think I'll wait a few more years. My 15 year old 27" Sony and 12 year old 32" Sony work just fine.

And having tow standard for video - Blue Ray & HD is just stupid. Why cant the industry ever get together and and decide on one standard? Same thing with DVD +/-

By 2010 I think, ALL television transmissions must be in HD and will likely be getting to full HD.
Blue Ray and HD is a "Sony vs. The rest of the World" thing... Sony is just trying to corner a market (their right as a business) but its up to the consumer to say no.
Super Dave - I don't know where you've been looking, but I know all sorts of places you can get a 42" LCD at full HD for $1600 and 720/1080i for $1000 or less. Yes the TV's are more expensive, but so are Cars, Houses, Appliances, and EVERYTHING.
I just don't see the point in buying something that isn't fully optioned b/c that means its just that much sooner that it is obsolete
