TV's - Plasma, LCD, Or Something Else?
 

Thinking of buying a bigger TV - would love a 50" but still $$.

Anyway, TV shopping is pretty confusing these days....whats better - LCD's or Plasmas? I was under the impression that the bulbs in the plasma burn out quick and that they use a lot more power than LCD's.

I can offer basics:

Plasma doesn't have a "bulb". It has "pigment", or I think that's what it's called. The typical life span of plasma of around 6 yrs. I think they can be refilled at that time but not sure. Either way expect issues around that time. The picture quality of plasma is supposed to be the best. "Burn-in" can also be a problem with plasma.

LCD is very good too. Some people have said that with the fine tuning they can get just as good of a quality pic as plasma. They have few problems. Look at it this way; most people's computer monitors are LCD. How many problems does anyone have with them? Not many. "Burn-in" isn't supposed to be a problem with these.

Then you have DLP which is what I have. I like it. The picture quality is good enough for me. Steep side viewing angles or when standing up and looking down at the TV cause a dark picture or you can't see it at all. No "burn-in" issues. The one down side to these is the bulbs. They have a life psan of anywhere between 1 yr and 4 yrs and are $150-$400 to replace.

Make sure it's built in HD and not HD "ready" and that it's at least 1080i but preferably 1080p. --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080i http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p

I'd recommend Panasonic, Samsung and Mitsubishi. As of last year Mitsu was supposedly making the best DLP's out there. I believe it's a toss upwith Panasonic and Samsung when it comes to best LCD or plasma.

Don't discount Vizio either. Google them and you'll read some pretty nice reviews on them. They're usually quit a bit cheaper than the others. I believe they use older Samsung technology (Like 1yr behind.) but not positive.

LCD for TV's 40" or smaller -- GREAT picture and good contrast

I would go with Pioneer or Samsung -- DEFINATELY get 1080p - don't even mess with getting anything less.

As for anything larger, DLP is the way to go. Mitsu is still one of the best out there and it is amazing what you can see in HD!!!

we got a 50" in the frontroom and a 56 in the bedroom

dunno what kind they are...............I just turn em on and go to sleep in either room so it could be a 6" black and white for all that matteres to me

Texas Instruments has that new one with all the tiny mirrors that reflect the picture, from what ive seen they look dang good......

:ph: That's DLP. Texas Instruments just makes the mirror chip and sells it to any TV manufacturer that'll buy it.

These projectors are a lot different than the old ones though. They basically require 0 maintenance or adjustment. Just but the bulb when it blows.
