Default 6.0 turbo options

I need to put in a new turbo in our 2005 6.0 (58,000 miles ) What is a good rout to go? I refuse to put another stock turbo in.

Right now my turbo is over boosting it will hit 40 psi on a 1/4 throtal and it barks when ever I let off the throtal.

Any recomendations??

Thinking about doing a EGR delete at the same time. I can smell a little coolant coming from somewhere. Never had time to look in detail where it is coming from

What is considered max safe Booat pressure for a 6.0 without headstuds. I don have a edge juice but it is set on stock power. And that is giving me the 40 psi reading the factory gauge wont go past 20

You can probably just clean the stock turbo and be ok with it. Does the truck idle a lot? Does it ever get driven hard? With that many miles on an 05 my guess is it sits a lot? Usually the veins will rust from sitting, or they clog up from idling a lot. It's not difficult to "recondition" the turbos on these. I swear I post this link 15x a week...

If there actually is an issue with it and it's junk, get a Garrett Powermax. It's a drop in replacement and it's cheaper than a new OEM. It will support up to +175hp over stock, but will still work great with stock injectors and stock tuning. They're around $1250 shipped if memory serves.

The barking when letting off the throttle is normal. Obviously not ALL the time, but they do that. There is no blow off valve or wastegate on these so the air just goes back out the intake.

If the factory gauge reads 20 and your Edge reads 40, I'd suspect an issue, most likely with the Edge. Maybe get a mechanical gauge hooked up to verify one or the other!?

No one can really say what max boost is for headbolts. The boost usually isn't what kills the gaskets, it's the timing from tuners. Edge, diablos and the likes usually have ridiculously high combustion chamber pressures, due to lack of control with timing and fueling. Custom tuned is the way to go.

My $0.02

the safe boost mark on a 6.0 is 0 psi. ive seen stock trucks blow the heads off. im not sure what they say the actual safe boost is.

as far as the problem with the turbo on the truck, it sounds like the turbo vanes are stuck on it.

if ya put a turbo on it, deffinately put a egr delete on it.

It use to do a fair amount of towing, I have blown 2 intercoolers and I have a problem with it getting hot when pulling a big load. So that is really why it has such low miles is I always take the other pickup. I have had my 2010 dodge for 8 months and I am past 20,000 on it.

When I get a chance I am going to pull the turbo and see if I can clean it and see if that takes care of it. I have a feeling the edge boost reading is right because It use to read the same as the factory gauge. since the turbo barking has started I have been getting the higher boost reading from the edge.

Just how bad is it to pull the turbo on the 6.0

For someone who has never done it before? A couple hours maybe, they're really not bad at all. Take the intake off completely, loosen the turbo down pipe clamp, loosen the turbo up pipe clamp, three bolts hold the turbo on, two are parallell with the ground in the front, one on left of turbo, one on right. Last bolt is in back towards firewall and it's vertical, hard to see, but not hard to get once you know where it is. Then pull turbo up to get drain tube unseated, then sort of roll it towards the passenger side and it will come out. Helps to have an extra set of hands taking it out, but not necessary.

2 blown intercoolers? That's quite UNcommon on 6.0's... That's interesting. I run around 35psi on my stock turbo, don't ever have heat issues, even when towing. When you say big load, how big are we talking here?

Where does a person call for one of them. I need a new one too. Seals are going in mine. I've called a few places and got some prices haven't talked to anyone about the Powermax.

I know Jimmy and Chad from Upstate Diesel Performance (they're sponsors on here) are Garrett dealers and can get these.

Jimmy is GMCLBZ on here, shoot him a PM, tell him I sent ya.

Great turbo's, can't wait to get some 155 sticks and a powermax myself.

Definetly a powermax. Any good diesel site should have them Innovative Diesel, Gearhead Automotive, and some others carry them. As far as an EGR delete kit goes, I would get FCDP's kit. Its very nice and clean.
