I used teflon tape on mine, haven't found leaks yet, but if it does I'm going to Loctite 545. Don't use any other type of loctite than a specific "thread sealant" one though. The 545 is specifically made for fuels and such, I think it'd work great for this.
Also you can tell it's time to change the coolant filter by feeling the top of the housing. If it is piping hot, it's still good. When it starts getting cooler after running the truck for a while (ie, no flow through it) then change it.

What are you going to save? $10? $20? Plus you have to go through the trouble of piecing it together? Everyone I've spoke to who has done this wishes they just bought one. Thus why I just bought one. Trust me, you're not saving anything. Just pay the $130 and buy it!
