keep the truck under 3200rpm and your stock springs, retainers, and locks will do fine.

With my old silver bullet on the truck I would push 50psi @ 3000 rpm with stock springs ( 180k miles on them) and never had a valve float.

So even though I'll be shifting where I would be with a 3k kit, the 4k kit straight-up acts and handles better than the 3k spring? From what I gather more responsive and quicker to fuel or something?

Ok I'm thinking I'll look into the 4k kit then, just being careful to not over rev it. Where does the gsk install exactly?

Well since 85 305 has declined to do virtually any supporting mods and doesn't even know where the spring is, I'd say this whole conversation is moot no matter which way you slice it.

Go with the 4k springs, they fuel alot harder in the lower rpm's and if you plan on doing more mods in the future you wont have to worry about the gov springs. I havent put the valve springs in mine yet either and I have the 4k gov. springs. Wouldnt advise pulling past 3000-3200rpms without the valve springs but you dont really need to rev past there anyways.

Go with the 4's. imo. just be carefull. I understand putting the springs in to match it would be the RIGHT thing to do but just use your noggin.
