Default Power steering gearbox help

I'm starting to get some play in my steering and checked it out and found there is some slack in the gearbox. Is there any way to adjust or take the slack out of it? The input turns almost a half-turn before the output starts to turn... Thanks in advance...

Default Steering Box

I had the same thing. There is a procedure in the owner's manual for adjustment, but keep in mind this is a band-aid. If too tight, performance suffers. From what I've read, a readjustment will buy some time but not fix the problem - poor manufacture tolerances. My gearbox was toast at 60K. I ended up springing for a Redhead steering box, Defiant steering box stabilizer, tie rod ends and ball joints X 4. Real tight now.

How much did that run you? I do quite a bit of off road driving during the hunting season and would really like to beef some stuff up...

It was expensive. Redhead box - $ 319 + core / shipping, Defiant brace - around $ 180, Napa tie rod end around $ 40. Ball joints plus alignment - around $ 900 incl. labor. Gallon of Amsoil ATF for power steering fluid flush - around $ 40. For ball joints, I went with Moog. Carli has some really nice looking ball joints for $ 1100 for parts only, and they will probably outlast your truck. I went with Moog for cost reasons.

Believe it or not I just bought a reconditioned gearbox from NAPA for $148.00 plus core. The dealer wanted $118.00 for just a new seal. I also went with the dynatrac joints for $535.00 (mass buy on this forum) and a stabilizer for $189.00 from Larry, see below :
