5.9 turbo flutters under boost, loss of power and fuel mpgs gone to all hell.
Hey everyone, new guy here. Read through a few different discussions and this sight and thought I would get the best feedback here. Got me a 2006 RAM 2500 mega cab to tow my toy hauler farther than my land rover could. Love the 5.9's because my buddy had one and almost 500k and she still pulled all his cement pumps everyday of course he replaced a few things but I fell in love with his truck. Oh and especially the mega cab. Love that the kids can recline the back seats and they love it too. Now I scored and got this one owner from auction with only 201K, all service records done at dodge from southern California. Not one ounce of rust. When I got it, no codes and passed smog immediately. Configured my hitch set up and made a 2 week trip from SoCal to Yellowstone. She was a beautiful thing. No hill I could go up with ease. Trip was amazing and lucky I was only about 2 hours away from home on the way back and noticed that going up the last hill to my destination I started losing speed so gave it some more throttle and nothing. Instead of the hearing the whistle of the turbo, it would start but then flutter under boost. Started to overheat a little bit so I just slowed down and crawled up it (never got above 3/4 of the temp gauge). I have no codes. I changed the coolant, oil and fuel filter before the trip and dropped a brand new OEM air filter. I checked all the boots and charge pipes and they all seem good. Never heard any hissing like a boost leak, just a flutter under boost. No oil or coolant leaks either as of tonight when I got under her. I've had and built turbo'd cars and still have a couple but have never been into the diesel scene until now. I'm thinking waste gate but has anyone else had this issue before? I've had some builds I did where the waste gate will stick open or just stay shut, but then I always overboost or underboost. Never had one that fluttered perfectly the same everytime for like 20 miles. And even now under no load (trailer) she does the same thing. Whats tripping me out is the no codes or CEL. Any input would be great as I want to plan another trip soon but dont want to take it to a mechanic (as i have been a mechanic for almost 30 years but never got into the the diesel scene). Which now only thing I can think of is to make a test tube and put like maybe 20psi into the system and see if there is a dramatic bleed off somewhere? Any advice I would appreciate greatly. I love and want to fix my own vehicles. Just new to diesel that's all. Much love everyone.
