Yeah, these trucks aint cheap to fix or rebuild. If it were me faced with your dilema, I'd walk away. There are way too may unknown variables with that rig. The biggest unknown is how it was maintained and lack of service record(s). $7500 - $10,000 may as well be a million bucks when money is tight. Just keep in mind that you ultimately have to live with your decision. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

How much is the guy asking for the truck? If you take into account the rebuild cost you will have a fresh motor! Maybe the bank will give you blue book for it! Work the deal with the guy so you get cash back from him!

He's asking 17k for it. I have a buddy with a 07 6.7 fully deleted, 4x4, 6 speed with 115k miles he's wanting to sell me for 20k but it's a 1 ton and I don't think I honestly need that much truck. ThTs why I'm looking for a 2500. But I'm definitely gona give it a look

Its better to have more truck than you need now, than not have enough truck when you really need it later.

Hahaha yea I know that, I just don't want a big truck that will eat me alive in fuel when I'm not pulling my camper.

If your talking one ton dually, then yeah its a bit heavier than a one ton SRW pick-up, but the other issue is transmission type (auto or manual) and rear gear ratio. When I was shopping for my Dodge CTD ( info in my signature) I was hell-bent on having a dually with an auto trans and 3.73 gears in the rear, and thats what I found and bought. I get an honest 23 mpg on the highway, and a pretty steady 18 in the city. A one ton truck with an auto with 4.10 gears would likely not fare so well in fuel mileage. My dads truck, 06 dodge dually has the 4.10 rear with a 6 speed manual trans. He gets the same hwy mileage as me but his city mpg is slightly better. He is way more conservative driver than i am ( slower). My truck and my dad's have identical mods, very simple. All mpg is calculated by hand and by the use of GPS. The over-head mpg calculator is way generous. My display will show 26.2 mpg on long hwy trips, but GPS and hand calc results is 23ish depending on terrain and wind. I do most of my traveling at night. Im very happy with that! My other dually (in my sig) is just a gas pig. 461 cubic inches of supercharged big block chevy with 4.10 posi rear leaves ALOT to be desired when it comes to fuel milage. That one hurts to drive!!!

Well it's SRW and as far as gearing i couldn't honestly tell ya. It has the 6 speed manual. And I never thought about double checking the digital overhead gauge for accuracy. Definitely will have to try that. It has stock tires, no lift, nothing aftermarket besides fully deleted. And yea I know what you mean about the gas hogs. I have a 86 Chevy Stepside 1/2 ton with 3/4 ton suspension, axels, and ect. 350 with a double barrel quadra jet carb with a custom cam it the motor. Not to mention military 38's for shoes. She don't get mpgs. It about 2 gallons per mile . Thank god for dual tanks so I can get it out of the driveway hahaha

Well if its a 6 speed manual, then its likely 4.10 gears, and pretty much stock will help MPGs. Still, blow-by is still an issue (if thats the one youre still referring to). One other ? is how hurried are you to get a rig?
I would go with your buddy's 07 6.7 CTD. You would know more of the history on that rig, than a complete unknown. The "unknown" is more of a gamble than your buddy's rig. Know what I mean? Hypothetically, if ya bought the truck with the blow-by for 17k, and had to end up rebuilding the engine, the total cost would far surpass the cost of your buddy's truck.
