Blow by problem

How hard/expensive is fixing a truck with minor blow by?

Bigg Redd 03-30-2015 03:17 PM

Well, its a rebuild, if thats what your asking. Describe "minor" blow-by. How many miles on that rig? Minor to some may not be minor to others. Ya know? What mods (if any) does it have? A rebuild can be pricey, but that also depends on what needs to be done to it.

Well it's at 178k, and I'm not sure bc it's one that I'm looking at buying. So I honestly do not know the severity of the problem. He just came out front and told me it "had a little blow by". I'm wanting to crawfish out of the deal but as rare a the trucks are it's hard not to go look at it.

Only mods on it are a cold air intake

Are there any maintenance records on it? Was it a hard working truck? Auto or Manual Trans? Transmission issues and clutch issues come to mind. 178k isnt really much of a factor, as these will easily do 600k or more, BUT that depends on how it was maintained and how hard it was worked. Personally I think its too early for it to have blow-by at that mileage. Mine has just over 173k and has no blow-by, but I dont really work my truck. I pull a 10k travel trailer 3 times per year. Those are the only times it gets a work-out. If the blow-by is actually being forced out of the vent tube, or when taking off the oil cap (chuffing),Id walk away from it.

It's got a 6 speed in it, new dual disk clutch, an he wa a flow hand in the oilfield, he used it to pull his 5th wheel camper. (Flow hands) only move locations once a month or so. But the actual amount it was pulled I don't know. So when I go look at it take the oil cap of and if I see white smoke puffing I should definitely walk away huh?

Bigg Redd 03-30-2015 06:24 PM

If its puffing alot, then yeah, walk away. I shouldnt be white smoke btw. likely a light blueish hue. See if ya cant take it for a test drive. That will tell you more ie: driving issues, noises, squeaks, pops or bangs, brake issues, steering etc. What are your goals for it? Work truck, Pull a travel trailer, daily driver? See if you can find out what the oil change intervals are.

Also, check the oil and make sure its not using oil or "making oil" , and no creamy (beige color) look to it.

I charge 7500 to R/R with a fresh long block! A shop will charge close to 10k

EasTxOilfields 03-30-2015 10:26 PM

7500 to 10k?! DAYUM!!!! Lol. Well I'm not gona cross it off my list till I look at it. I'm just very gun shy about buying a truck that already has a problem. Like I said it's my first diesel. And no matter what I don't wan to buy into something that is going to burn my bank account down in the end. I'll go look at see how bad it is. The truck has everything in it I'm looking for, only problem is blow by and it's got me a little nervous paying money into a truck that I know already has a problem. Know what I mean? Thanks for all the help by the way
