Default Rear Wheel Lock Up Fix

hey all, I figured I'd share my fix for the dreadful passenger rear wheel that would lock up when you hit the brakes for the 1st time after the truck would sit awhile.

I dealt with this for about a year and I think I finally got it. When I bought the truck it was fine. I put new rear brake shoes on along with some other maintenance when the problem became evident.

First thing I did was turn the rear drums. The problem got better, but never fixed. I then re-adjusted the shoes, that didn't help. Next was new wheel cylinders - no better, just a little better rear braking. Lastly I installed a new hardware kit - problem no better. I was also told that others had this problem, nobody knew the fix.

I think I narrowed it down to cheap rear shoes. I bought them from Advance Auto for around $30 and they had a lifetime replacement warranty. So I ordered a good set of Bendix shoes. I pulled the cheap set off, returned them and got the $30 credited to the new bendix shoes which cost around $90.

I've been driving everyday now for about 2 months since I put the motorcycle away and the rear wheel hasn't locked since the change to Bendix brake shoes. I guess it just goes to show you get what you pay for, but I never would have thought the cheap shoes would have locked the rear wheel.

Hopefully this will help someone else, as soon as I changed the shoes the problem was gone and braking is very good now. So go ahead and splurge for the good brakes, it was definetely worth it for me

Scott

Glad to hear ya got it fixed. Cheap rear shoes have been the bane of many a bomber. They've also been known to cause premature anti-lock activation in trucks with only rear anti-lock.
