Default axle ratio question

Someone started a gear ratio swap thread and it jogged my memory...the truck in my thread has a Dana 80 rear end, my glove box says 3.55, but the tag on the axle says 3.54...any answer as to why this is? Anybody else have this with their truck?

This is one answer I got...

to answer you question about your gears. the front has one different than front. like 3.55 and 3.54 and 4.10 and 4.11 . this is done because the front is turning. it keeps the 4 wheel drive from binding up as bad. when i was a kid jeeps had the same front and back ratio and they would bind up and was dangerous on snow highways at speeds. its like not having the same size tires on it. hope i got my point across. thanks ****

you will find one end is 3.55 and the other is 3.54

also with different amount of teeth on gears (both large and small gears) it is nearly impossible to get the exact same ratio

Right. And this is because the front and rear axles dont spin at EXACTLY the same speed. Not enough to notice unless you run on dry pavement.
