Welcome!
The dodge diesel is not unreliable at all. In fact they are probably the most reliable of the big 3 IMO.
The guys on here are on here mainly because they like to tinker and make more performance. Of course there are the guys that are on here because they want to stop known problems before they happen.
It is kind of like computers; they are fine the way they are, but why use them as 'fine' when you can put more RAM in and install a second or larger hard drive?

I wish mine had 99,000 miles. I am pushing 239,000 on my '01.
When my LP went south, I relocated mine to the frame rail as well. Only when I upgraded to larger injectors and the Adrenaline did I upgrade to an aftermarket pump. If you are running stock injectors, stock turbo you will be fine with the stock lift pump (just carry a spare with you ).

Ya, I see that now, more go and more power is the game. Both my Boys have recently
purchased early 12v duelly's and are now learning about them. One of them has my old 84 Chevy Siverado 1 ton crew cab duelly 4x4 that he pulled out the 6.2 and replaced with a 5.9L and 5-speed tranny, great truck now and very minty too; under 100,000mi -
Are the after market LP (sundog or other) more reliable than stock LP? gosh I'm stupid...

I would say yes. The stock Carters do have issues. Most aftermarket ones will last longer. However, you don't always need to upgrade to the Airdog or FASS. They are nice yes but they are also a pretty penny.

If you don't want to get a gauge I would get something like this. BD Power - Product: Low Fuel Pressure LED Alarm

It will save you from a much larger bill.

If you dont have the equipment to test the pressure switch in that kit its unreliable at best.

Getting a fuel pressure guage and a good lift pump clears up just about all of the problems that exist with the second gen 24V engines.

Doubt it can be said any streighter, looks like I need the pressure gauge. Does it tap into the fuel line just after the lift pump?

Pretty much. I have mine coming off the bottom of the fuel filter canister from a 'T' but it can be anyplace between the LP and the VP.

I like the idea of having the gauge as close to the VP44 as possible. Then you know what's getting to the VP44, not what is being supplied by the LP.

That is true, but Friction Loss in that short of a distance is going to be negligible.
